Claretians first started their missionary activities in the Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly in 1994 by establishing a rehabilitation center for the ex-prisoner at Anchumana, Edappally. While serving as the Director of Jesus Fraternity, Fr. Alexander Kureekattil visited the prisons all over the state and felt the need to give proper character formation for the ex-offenders in order to bring them back to the main stream of the society. Thus Claretian missionaries got involved in the Prison Ministry. The first stage of the rehabilitation program of the ex-prisoners was conducted at Snehashram, Trissur and Fr. Cyriac Kollamparambil, cmf was co-ordinating the activities of the center. In 1996 he died in a motorcycle accident. Later this center was taken up by Jesus Fraternity. The second stage of the rehabilitation process was entrusted to the Claretians. Thus we started a center called Shanti Bhavan for the second stage of the rehabilitation of the ex-prisoners in a rented house at Pathadipalam in 1995.
In the year 1998 a house was purchased at Pathadipalam and it was named Shanti Nivas. In the same year it was raised into the status of a residence. This is a place where our missionaries live as a community looking after the activities of Shanti Bhavan (rehabilitation center for the persons who have completed the punishment period at the prisons, but have no place to go) and engaging in different missionary activities. It was raised to the status of a house in 2001. A center for the care of HIV/AIDS affected persons was opened on 16 december 2003 at Kochi. This is the second center of CARE Home. Shanit Nivas undertakes various apostolic and social activities like preaching ministry, family counseling, rehabilitation of the mentally retarded, counseling and home-based care for the persons who are infected with HIV/AIDS.
