Fr. Joseph Vadakkedath
The place Kottarakara has a special reference in the history of Claretians in India. In 1956 when Rev. Fr. Peter Schwiger, Superior General, visited India with the prospects of establishing a Claretian foundation here, the two places in South India that got his attention were Kottarakara and Punalur. So it was a dream for the Claretians in India to have a mission at Kottarakara. Claretian Missionaries were actively involved in the pastoral activities of the Archdiocese of Changanacherry ever since our foundation in this Syro-Malabar heartland. Many of our new priests had their initial parish experience in the different parishes of the archdiocese. At the invitation of the archdiocese to initiate a Claretian establishment in the diocese we deemed it very appropriate to choose Kottarakara as the base because of its historical relevance. Through an agreement with St Thomas Delegation the archdiocese entrusted us the care of the scattered Syro-Malabar Christians of Kottarakara. Kottarakara being a center of various ecumenical groups and churches the Syro-Malabar Christians of the area lacked a proper and organized foundation for them. Claretian Alayam is established on 12 January 2004 with the intention of organizing the Syro-Malabar community here. Fr. Joseph Vadakkedathu is in-charge of this center.
