Penchikalpet is a very remote and one of the least developed villages in Bejjoor Mandal of Adilabad district of Andhra Pradesh. Most of the inhabitants here belong to the Scheduled caste and Scheduled tribes. Only 27% of the land is cultivated in this area because of the lack of proper irrigation facilities. There are no proper roads and transportation facilities to reach this place. In the early 1990s missionaries from Saligam mission used to visit Penchikalpet and the nearby villages. With the intention of starting a primary school and thus establishing Christian presence in this region Mar Vijay Anand, Bishop of Chanda bought a piece of land at Penchikalpet.
At the request of Mar. Vijay Anand, Claretians took up this area from the diocese for evangelization and human promotion in the year 1999. Fr. Jose Kattath, who was in-charge of the Marthidi mission, visited these villages and started missionary activities here. At the request of the local people we started a Telugu medium primary school - Amala Vidhya Nikethan- in the same year. In 2001 under the initiatives of Fr. Joshy Nirappel, we started a hostel with the support of CNEWA for students coming from far away villages. At present there are 120 students in the hostel. This mission is raised to the status of residence called Claret Vihar in 2004.Penchikalpet village is basically a non-Christian area. But through the efforts of our missionaries and the children who study in our hostel here and in Marthidi and Kaghaz Nagar there is a general awareness about Jesus and Christianity. And now most of the people have contact with nearby Catholic parishes. Already there are few families who have received catholic faith and there are few others wanting to embrace Christianity. Evangelization is one of the main thrusts of this mission. We conduct regular prayer meetings and Holy Mass in the villages and in our center. Faith formations through catechism classes, Bible study, catechetics, learning of prayers etc. are initiated here. The currents of modern development and technological advancements are yet to catch up with the villages in these regions. Our missionaries have a great role to play in bringing the traits of development a reality to the people here.
